The Art Of Writing

I Got Published! Now, I'm A Professional, Right?

In a way, yes you certainly would be a published author with a publishing credit, but that's not all it takes. Being published, and being professionally published, and being a professional author, are all different things. For one thing, there's a big difference in getting published in a minor publication and a major nationally distributed professional magazine like Asimov's. There's also a big difference in getting published in a run-of-the-mill on-line publication, and a hightly respected one like Sci-Fiction. Even if you do manage to get published in a magazine like Asimov's, or on Sci-Fiction, it's still only one publication. Then you have to do it again and again. If you publish a novel, it'll likely only make you a few thousand for the first one. To be considered a real professional, and to pay the bills, you'll have to write and publish a lot, and consistently.
